Ten Tips How to Survive Working at Consultant Company

I’ve been working in two different consultant companies. Totally I’ve been working for almost four years in consultation world. In this post I want to share you some advice on how to survive working at consultant company. The inspiration of this post was from many difficulties I’ve faced.

#1 Working Experiences

The term consultant itself defines everything. When you work at consultant company, so you are “consultant”. You are the place where your client ask about their difficulties. You are also a right place to judge something. It is impossible to do that correctly if you are lack of experience. That is why consultant companies must be reinforced with well-experienced personnel, probably the one with more than ten years working experience in special fields (for example in LNG field, geothermal field, and so on). How if you are fresh graduate or the one with lack experience? I think you should learn from experience ones. It will be better for consultant company to invest in experienced personnel. (more…)

Wunderlist: Powerful To-Do List Program

This time I will not write about chemical engineering, how to do calculation, and so on.. but I want to share about to-do list program I have used since yesterday.

For several times, I used Microsoft Office OneNote to create to-do list. It is very simple and nice. Every time I start my day at work, I open it and see what to do today. I found creating to-do list helped me focus.

Yesterday I had an idea to find other to-do list program and tried it. Then I found to-do istI saw to-do ist is very nice, clean, and simple. I downloaded it but it took a very long time to synchronize. But, I can use it online on website. In the end, I uninstalled the program and tried another one: Wunderlist. (more…)

Microbial Inhibitor for Cooling Water Treatment

My company is trying to be a vendor of small equipment package, such as chemical injection. I actually have a limited knowledge about this area, but in my understanding, chemical injection package is very simple. It usually consists of chemical storage tank, dosing pump, mixer, and accessories, such as low level switch, controller, and so on. The job became a  bit complicated when we don’t have enough knowledge about that.

However, to improve the ability as a vendor, my company decides to try to enter this area. The good news is I also participate.

Our first project is to supply chemical injection system for cooling water treatment.  (more…)

Creating Piping and Instrumentation Diagram: My Real Experiences

Example of P&ID
http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/p-id-piping-instrumentation-diagram-d_466.html

As already described in previous posts (such as here and here), I was involved in EPC project. Creating piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) is one of my responsibility. I think P&ID is a collection of information and collaboration of every discipline, such as process, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation. Once I think creating P&ID is easy enough, but I change my mind then. It is not.

I revised my P&ID (water treatment plant, fuel supply system, and wastewater treatment plant) several times. I am not quite sure if I am a kind of diligent person, but I am sure creating “perfect P&ID” requires a lot of works and patience. I sometimes think there’s nothing wrong with my P&ID. However, if you let someone, for example your colleagues, your boss, or someone with more experiences than you to check your P&ID, you will laugh at yourself. It happened to me. My P&ID was far from perfect. I understand now. Perfect P&ID requires continuous improvement. (more…)

What is Redwood Viscocity

I just got a really embarassing experience as chemical engineer. Sometimes we deal with a really complicated problem and we can handle that. On the other hand, we handle a simple problem, but we can’t handle that. How if a chemical engineer can not convert the kinematic viscosity expressed in Redwood second into dynamic viscosity? That is my problem. It happened about two days ago. My boss apparently was really disappointed. (more…)
