Ten Tips How to Survive Working at Consultant Company

I’ve been working in two different consultant companies. Totally I’ve been working for almost four years in consultation world. In this post I want to share you some advice on how to survive working at consultant company. The inspiration of this post was from many difficulties I’ve faced.

#1 Working Experiences

The term consultant itself defines everything. When you work at consultant company, so you are “consultant”. You are the place where your client ask about their difficulties. You are also a right place to judge something. It is impossible to do that correctly if you are lack of experience. That is why consultant companies must be reinforced with well-experienced personnel, probably the one with more than ten years working experience in special fields (for example in LNG field, geothermal field, and so on). How if you are fresh graduate or the one with lack experience? I think you should learn from experience ones. It will be better for consultant company to invest in experienced personnel. Read More

Wunderlist: Powerful To-Do List Program

This time I will not write about chemical engineering, how to do calculation, and so on.. but I want to share about to-do list program I have used since yesterday.

For several times, I used Microsoft Office OneNote to create to-do list. It is very simple and nice. Every time I start my day at work, I open it and see what to do today. I found creating to-do list helped me focus.

Yesterday I had an idea to find other to-do list program and tried it. Then I found to-do istI saw to-do ist is very nice, clean, and simple. I downloaded it but it took a very long time to synchronize. But, I can use it online on website. In the end, I uninstalled the program and tried another one: Wunderlist. Read More

Microbial Inhibitor for Cooling Water Treatment

My company is trying to be a vendor of small equipment package, such as chemical injection. I actually have a limited knowledge about this area, but in my understanding, chemical injection package is very simple. It usually consists of chemical storage tank, dosing pump, mixer, and accessories, such as low level switch, controller, and so on. The job became a  bit complicated when we don’t have enough knowledge about that.

However, to improve the ability as a vendor, my company decides to try to enter this area. The good news is I also participate.

Our first project is to supply chemical injection system for cooling water treatment.  Read More

Creating Piping and Instrumentation Diagram: My Real Experiences

Example of P&ID
http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/p-id-piping-instrumentation-diagram-d_466.html

As already described in previous posts (such as here and here), I was involved in EPC project. Creating piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) is one of my responsibility. I think P&ID is a collection of information and collaboration of every discipline, such as process, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation. Once I think creating P&ID is easy enough, but I change my mind then. It is not.

I revised my P&ID (water treatment plant, fuel supply system, and wastewater treatment plant) several times. I am not quite sure if I am a kind of diligent person, but I am sure creating “perfect P&ID” requires a lot of works and patience. I sometimes think there’s nothing wrong with my P&ID. However, if you let someone, for example your colleagues, your boss, or someone with more experiences than you to check your P&ID, you will laugh at yourself. It happened to me. My P&ID was far from perfect. I understand now. Perfect P&ID requires continuous improvement. Read More

What is Redwood Viscocity

I just got a really embarassing experience as chemical engineer. Sometimes we deal with a really complicated problem and we can handle that. On the other hand, we handle a simple problem, but we can’t handle that. How if a chemical engineer can not convert the kinematic viscosity expressed in Redwood second into dynamic viscosity? That is my problem. It happened about two days ago. My boss apparently was really disappointed. Read More

How to Calculate Jockey Pump Capacity in Fire Fighting System

About two days ago, my colleague asked me about inconsistency in our design basis of fire fighting system of our on-going project. In our design basis, we stated that the capacity of jockey pump is 50 gpm (the capacity of main fire pump is 500 gpm for electric motor fire fighting and diesel engine fire fighting, respectively). But vendor who supply fire fighting package stated that they will supply jockey pump with the capacity of 25 gpm. It would be a problem if the Construction Management (the one who monitors and review the product of the project) notices this. The question that will be come up is are you sure the capacity of jockey pump (which is 25 gpm) is enough in case there is a fire? The question rises in my mind is

Chemical engineer’s Diary: How to Keep on Track

Working as chemical engineer in Project Management Company is sometimes difficult. The reason is, mostly, we, the chemical engineers, young one or old one, fresh one or expert one, have to handle more than one project. We called that system as matrix.

In my company, the newly come chemical engineer usually handle one project. Then, on the second or third month of working, they will start to handle at least two project simultaneously. Some people may not have difficulties to manage this. But, for me, it is very hard. Read More

First Step to Learn Foreign Language

Once upon a time, there was a Japanese old man who had not engaged in much physical activity. He could not bend over and touch his toes. Then, he decided to gain the flexibility without putting stress on his body. He put together a stack of paper, thousands of sheets, that reached up to his knees. Then, he bent over and touched the top of the stack with his fingertips, holding the position for a little while, which was not at all hard to do. The next day, he removed two sheets from the stack and did the same thing.

Every day from then on, he removed two more sheets of paper from the stack. The difference from one day to the next was so slight as to be practically imperceptible, so he never had any problem bending over, touching the top sheet, and holding the position for a minute or two. After many months, the stack was considerably lower, until there was no paper at all left, and he could easily touch his toes. He had achieved his goal, with no strain, no pain, and no stress on his system. All it took was patience and perseverance. Read More

How to make Hyperlink in The Same Current Document in Microsoft Word

The leader of my BFS (Bankable Feasibility Study) project ask me to insert Hyperlink in every attachment I made. That idea did not cross in my mind before and I thought it would be really great. The problem is I don’t know how to insert hyperlink in the same current document in Microsoft Word. Unlike making hyperlink in Microsoft Powerpoint, the current display of hyperlink window in Microsoft Word (especially if you want to make hyperlink in the same document) is a bit different for me. Then, I browsed the tips. This is the copy of the tips I got from office.microsoft.com.

  1. To link to a place in the current document, you can use either heading styles or bookmarks in Word (in my case, I applied heading style then I applied bookmarks. Remember! You can’t type the bookmarks name with space, so use “_” to separate one word with other)
  2. In the current document, do one of the following:
    • Insert a bookmark at the location you want to go to.
    • Apply one of Word’s built-in heading styles to the text at the location you want to go to.
  3. Select the text or object you want to display as the hyperlink.
  4. On the Standard toolbar, click Insert Hyperlink Button image.
  5. Under Link to, click Place in This Document.
  6. In the list, select the heading or bookmark you want to link to.

It is really working! I expand my mind to hyperlink every figure and table on my Microsoft word file (if I have enough time 😉 ).
